Bringing Light to the Darkness of Human Trafficking (Trafficking in Persons)

A thought-provoking video showing a young Asian mother trying to sell her young daughter to people traffickers has struck a chord with thousands on Facebook.

The harrowing video, launched in time for International Women’s Day, opens with the ‘mother’ addressing the camera as the child is sat in her lap clutching a teddy bear. She tells viewers that the girl will be “very pretty” one day, before breaking down in tears as she claims she has “no choice”.

The video then reveals itself to be part of a new pro-bono campaign by anti-human trafficking non-governmental organisation Hagar Singapore. Created by independent Singapore agency Blak Labs, the online video has been shared nearly 1,400 times on Facebook and has drawn hundreds of comments from many convinced the video is authentic – before the big reveal.

The campaign – running on Facebook, YouTube and in print media – also consists of four ads showing women whose stories are based on survivors helped by Hagar. “Human trafficking has devastated millions of lives across the world, but there’s always hope for recovery, and that’s what we want to achieve with this campaign,” said Hagar Singapore director of marketing and communications Lynette Lim.
