THE ROMEO PIMP

Most commonly, the “Romeo pimp” poses as a boyfriend to the potential victim where the trafficker assesses the victim’s vulnerabilities. He promises a bright future, including materialistic (i.e. a home) and non-materialistic items (i.e. love, marriage and protection).

GROOMING

• This is the honeymoon phase where the victim is now under the impression that the trafficker is her “boyfriend.”

• The Romeo Pimp makes promises of love and a future. He will buy the victim gifts and pay for hair and nail appointments.

COERCION/MANIPULATION

• The Romeo pimp begins to send mixed messages as the victim tries to get back into the honeymoon phase.

• The pimp will begin conditioning the victim, using sex as a reward.

• The pimp will seek to isolate victims from loved ones.

EXPLOITATION

• The pimp will bring up the idea of working in the sex trade. At this point, the victim now “owes” the trafficker.

• The pimp refers to the victim’s dreams and manipulates him or her by pulling from their vulnerabilities. This leads to a “trauma bond” of loyalty to a destructive person.
